2. Using XAS programs

The XAS system is a collection of programs (cooperating essentially via the XAS environment which are invoked from the usual Unix shell or VMS DCL prompt.
In this respect XAS is unlike packages with an overarching monitor (like the MIDAS monitor or the IRAF cl) and also unlike monolithic programs like XSPEC.

Each XAS command can be invoked in one of the following way (please note the notation conventions used throughout this document) :

interactively typing the command name
passing all arguments on the run string
passing some arguments only on the run string
using a command file (like a parameter file)
in a mixed way

It is also possible to combine a sequence of commands to make a procedure
